Make: FEG, Hungary. A German contract Rifle. In 1941 “jhv” was the Nazi Ordnance code for Fémáru Fegyver és Gépgyár (FEG) in Budapest, Hungary.

Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “jhv” and “41”. The left side of the receiver is marked with a Nazi “eagle / swastika”, with the serial number, and “G 98/40”. The left side of the barrel shank is marked with an “eagle / swastika” and with the serial number. The bolt handle is marked “9362” and “h”. The bolt head is marked “9362”. The rear of the cocking indicator and the safety lever are each marked “62”. The underside of the rear sight, nosecap, barrel band, bottom metal (twice), buttplate, stock collar (wrist band), and underside of the buttstock are each marked with the serial number. The bottom metal, left side of the stock collar, right side of the nosecap, and top of the rear sight base are each marked with a Nazi “eagle / swastika / WaA56” Waffenamt. The bottom metal, buttplate right side of the receiver (twice), right side of the rear sight base (twice), and the barrel band are each marked with German “eagle / 56” inspection stamps. The underside of the buttstock is also marked “jhv”. The underside of the grip is marked “0”.
Barrel Length: Approximately 23 3/4 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is atall inverted “V” post. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding escalator assembly marked from “1-20”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, barrel band with sling bar, nosecap, hole for the included cleaning rod, sling well with sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The refinished buttplate has scratches and surface erosion showing through the finish. It also shows scrapes & scratches. The nosecap & barrel band show scrapes, small scratches, and some oxidation. The stock shows numerous scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Several of the marks have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild
Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are grey. The rifling is deep. There is erosion in the grooves and at the muzzle.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. Small scratches and areas of oxidation showing through the new finish. The rear sight base and bottom metal have some pin prick surface erosion showing through the new finish. The barrel shows scrapes, light scratches, and some discoloration. The bottom metal shows scrapes & a few small scratches. The receiver shows light scrapes and a few flecks of oxidation. The screw heads show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a brown leather sling. The leather shows scrapes, surface cracking, and discoloration. The buckle shows scrapes & thinning. It is in about Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Rare Hungarian made Mannlicher G98/40 Infantry Rifle was made for the Nazi’s in 1941. It is a German contract rifle that was made by Fémáru Fegyver és Gépgyár (FEG). During WWII Hungary was part of the Axis Alliance. The G98/40 is based on the Hungarian Mannlicher Model 1935 Infantry Rifle. It was redesigned for the German contract. The caliber was changed to 8mm Mauser, the bolt handle was turned down, a staggered Mauser magazine was fitted flush with the bottom of the stock, and Mauser stock hardware was used. The rifle still has deep Nazi markings with intact “eagles” and “swastikas” on both the metal and wood. The bolt was replaced during the rebuild but the metal parts on the rifle have matching part numbers. This Rare G98/40 will add nicely to a WWII collection.
