Our Assessment: The Madsen Light Machine Gun is one of the earliest successful light machine gun designs, developed at the turn of the twentieth century by Dansk Rekyl Riffel Syndikat of Denmark. Produced from the early 1900s through the mid-twentieth century, the Madsen saw service with numerous nations around the world and earned a reputation for its distinctive recoil-operated system and compact profile. This example, chambered in 8x58RD and fitted with a 23 inch barrel plus flash hider and bipod, represents a semi-automatic conversion of the original military light machine gun platform.
Chambered in 8x58RD, a Danish service cartridge adopted in the late nineteenth century, this rifle retains a gray bore with distinct rifling, though erosion and light pitting are present throughout, rating 6 out of 10. The firearm has been refinished in parkerizing following its reweld from a de-milled receiver and conversion to semi-automatic configuration. Weld lines are faint but visible upon inspection. The rifle shows scattered scratches, scuffs, and operational wear consistent with a rebuilt vintage military arm. The wood buttstock features a straight wrist and straight comb with integral wood butt, measuring 13 inches length of pull. The stock displays extensive compression dents and scratches but no cracks, rating in Good condition for a vintage military stock.
Mechanically, the action cycles, though there appears to be a possible hammer follow issue and a qualified gunsmith inspection is recommended prior to any attempt at firing. The rear sight is a slider adjustable from 100 to 2000 meters, and the winged blade front sight remains intact. One 30 round box magazine is included. As a rewelded and semi-automatic converted Madsen, this example represents a historically significant early light machine gun design adapted for civilian semi-automatic ownership, presented in Very Good condition for a vintage remilled firearm.
