Model: Single Action Army, 3rd Generation Custom Shop “Horse Pistol”. Only 250 of these were made for Lew Horton. 180 of the 250 had unfluted cylinders. This is one of the 70 fluted cylinder guns.

Action Type: Single Action Revolver with Side Loading Gate Cylinder

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.”, the left is marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45”. The left of the frame is marked “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871 / JULY 2, 72 JAN. 19, 75” and with a rampant colt logo. The top of the backstrap is marked with the “Colt” logo in gold lettering.  The left of the trigger guard is marked “VP” in triangle at the front and “K” at the rear. The right of the trigger guard is marked “Z”. The bottom of the frame in front of the trigger guard and the left of each portion of the frame are marked “SA57067”.

Barrel Length: 7 1/2″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a quarter-round blade fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch at the rear of a groove in the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are a two-piece Ivory grip with gold Colt medallions.  There are minimal marks of wear or handling. There are no chips or cracks in the grips. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blued & Case Hardened

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no fouling or erosion present. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10. 

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are no significant dings or marks on the finish. There is no carbon buildup on the face of the cylinder. There is no turn line on the cylinder as evidence that this revolver has seen very little use. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. Lockup produces no perceptible play. The hammer spring is tight and the trigger is crisp. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Colt Single Action Army “Horse Pistol” represents a highly desirable late–twentieth-century continuation of Colt’s most iconic revolver, produced as a distributor exclusive for Lew Horton in 1984. Built by the Colt Custom Shop, this special edition was limited to just 250 revolvers, with only 70 examples produced with fluted cylinders. Lew Horton exclusives have become an important collecting niche in their own right, particularly following the company’s closure, adding long-term desirability to authenticated examples such as this.

Chambered in .45 Colt with the classic 7 1/2 inch barrel, this revolver closely mirrors the traditional cavalry-length Single Action Army while benefiting from modern Colt craftsmanship. The blued and case-hardened finish remains exceptional, retaining approximately 98 percent coverage with no evident turn line on the cylinder, no carbon on the face, and no notable handling marks. The ivory grips with gold Colt medallions are especially striking, presenting in excellent condition without cracks or chips, and the bore remains bright with sharp rifling and no fouling or erosion. Mechanical function is equally strong, with tight lockup, a crisp trigger, and smooth operation throughout.
