Our Assessment: The Kel-Tec Sub-9, a compact, foldable semi-automatic carbine, stands as a testament to innovation in firearms design. Released in the late 1990s, the Sub-9 was one of Kel-Tec’s early ventures into the carbine market, and its unique engineering made it an instant standout. The Sub-9 is chambered in 9mm, providing an accessible and affordable shooting experience with readily available ammunition. This makes it not only a solid choice for recreational shooting but also a viable option for home defense.
One of the defining features of this rifle is its foldable design. The barrel and stock assembly easily folds over the receiver, reducing the weapon’s overall length to a mere 16 inches when folded. This compact form factor allows for versatile storage options, including small safes, backpacks, or even vehicle compartments. The rifle accepts Glock 17 magazines, a convenient feature given the widespread availability of these magazines.
Though it was succeeded by the Sub-2000, the Kel-Tec Sub-9 remains a noteworthy firearm, encapsulating an era of ingenuity in gun manufacturing. Its balance between compact size and functionality is noteworthy, offering the shooter the best of both worlds in terms of portability and firepower. While no longer in production, the Sub-9 has its share of enthusiasts who appreciate its unique characteristics and utilitarian design. It may be a relic of its time, but its distinctiveness ensures that it will not be easily forgotten. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
