Our Assessment: This Sempert & Krieghoff–built drilling, later marked through the Johann Franzoj/Ferlach system of reproof and rechambering, represents the postwar continuation of one of Europe’s most refined sporting gun traditions. Produced between 1945 and 1953, this example uses Böhler Blitz Stahl tubes—an exceptionally strong, premium steel synonymous with high-grade Austrian and German combination guns. Originally chambered in Austria and later rechambered and reproofed in Germany, this drilling reflects the long service life and continued relevance of high-quality continental sporting arms in the decades after WWII. The classic 16 gauge barrels over a 6.5x57R rifle barrel make it an ideal Alpine configuration, equally suited for bird, fox, roe deer, and chamois. The included Hensoldt Wetzlar 4×32 scope further enhances its functionality and period authenticity.
Condition is quite strong for a mid-century drilling. About 85% of the original metal finish remains, with thinning, scratches, and light oxidation that present as honest field wear rather than neglect. The smoothbore barrels are bright, and the rifle barrel rates a 9/10, with sharp rifling and no erosion. The walnut stock has a defined cheekpiece and crisp checkering, with scattered handling marks consistent with careful but active use. Mechanically, the action is sound and all selector and lock functions behave correctly. As a complete, high-quality Alpine drilling with a premium period scope, this Franzoj-marked example offers substantial appeal to collectors of European combination guns and serious hunters who appreciate the craftsmanship of postwar Austrian–German sporting arms. We are no longer offering layaway. Please see our photos and good luck with your bid! -N.P
