Sights / Optics:
The front sight is a blade dovetailed to the muzzle. The rear sight is a U-notch on a semi-buckhorn base dovetailed to the barrel. This sight configuration is typical for late-19th-century sporting and target rifles.

Stock Configuration & Condition:
The stock is a two-piece walnut configuration with a straight grip and crescent steel buttplate. The wood shows scattered handling marks and a small area of light loss near the toe. The forearm matches the buttstock in finish, scuffs and grain. There are no major cracks or chips, and fit to metal is tight. Overall, the wood rates in about Good-Very Good condition for its age.

Type of Finish: Blued & Case Colored

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition:
The bore is bright with strong rifling and no visible erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition:
This rifle retains approximately 65% of its original finish. The round barrel exhibits thinning and patina consistent with its vintage, showing scattered marks from age and handling. The receiver has aged to a mottled patina with some flashes of remaining case color. Markings remain clear and legible, with the left side of the frame stamped: “JM MARLIN, NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. / BALLARD’S PATENT. NOV. 3. 1861.” The crescent buttplate has areas of oxidation and wear, but is free of major damage. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition given its age.

Mechanics:
The action functions properly. The falling block operates smoothly, and the set trigger breaks crisply. A .45-70 Government cartridge chambers correctly. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment:
This JM Marlin Ballard rifle, chambered in .45-70 Government, reflects the evolution of single-shot American precision rifles in the late 19th century. With its heavy, round barrel and set trigger, this rifle was likely intended for deliberate shooting at distance, either in target matches or for large game hunting on the frontier.

Ballard rifles, especially those made by JM Marlin in New Haven, were known for their excellent accuracy and craftsmanship. Chambered in .45-70 Gov’t—a powerful and historically significant cartridge—this example combines utility with historical appeal. The strong bore and proper chambering make it viable for careful (BP) shooting today, while its original finish and period markings offer great collector value.

Whether you’re a black powder enthusiast, historical arms collector, or simply appreciate fine 19th-century American gunmaking, this Ballard is a standout piece worthy of any collection. So bid high and bid firm. I encourage you to take a look at the condition in our high-quality photos. Good luck on your bid. -K.F.
