Barrel: “LMR” (Line Material Company of Birmingham, Alabama), “D6535448”, “7”, “53”, “P”, “M” and with a faded “crossed cannons” stamp – LMR provided barrels for International Harvester.
Rear Sight: “LEFT” and arrow twice on the windage knob. The elevation knob is marked “UP” and “DOWN” each with an arrow, “BATTLE” and “RANGE” with a triangle. A couple things here. These markings do not match the markings you have in the Sights/Optics section. Also, right after this you say that the sights are described below. Whichever set of markings is wrong needs to be corrected/removed. If you’re going to say that the sights are described below, better to have the markings there.
The stock and sights are described below.
Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “DRC”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of 2.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The three piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nosecaps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged metal door for storage in the butt. The proof stamp is on the front of the grip. The left side of the stock is stamped with Department of Defense eagle defense stamp. The wood shows a few light nicks and scuffs. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate is in very good condition. The buttplate compartment can open easily. The stock rates in about Fine Plus overall condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original to rebuild.
Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright. The rifling is deep. There is scattered light erosion, mostly in the grooves. The bore shows an M.E. of 3.5. The throat shows a T.E. of 3.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish to the rebuild. The metal shows subtle dings in the metal. There is some thinning on the exposed barrel. The right side of the receiver shows light thinning from cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is a leather sling included. The sling appears to have wear on the sides. There is minor verdigris on the metal parts of the sling. Overall, the sling is in Fine condition. There is cleaning equipment stored in the buttplate. (oiler, lube, cleaning rods, patches and combo tool)
Our Assessment: This M1 garand was built on an International harvester gap letter receiver. These Gap letter receivers had their drawing number (F 6528291) hand-stamped instead of being machine-applied. These receivers were selected for use in a last in first out manner. Thus pulling them out in reverse order. The LMR barrels that were used had dates ranging from 4-53 to 8-53. This gun is great for an interesting piece for a collector. The bore shows use, but it looks great, not appearing to have seen much use since it was rebuilt. This will make a fine addition to a Garand or US small arms collection. Good luck!
