Action Type: Semi Auto, Detachable Magazine

Markings: There is no import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 5003455” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 2 – 44” and “P”. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked “NI” which is an Inland mark (page 89). The magazine release is marked “M” and “WI” which is an Inland mark (pages 100-101). The smooth push button safety is unmarked which is consistent with Inland and others (page 95). The inside of the operating slide is marked “PI” which is an Inland mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “3” and “OI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The Type II rear sight is marked “PI” which was used by Inland and Saginaw Gear  (page 29). The Type II barrel band is marked “PI in a triangle” which is an Inland mark (page 59). The interior of the handguard is marked “OI” which is an Inland mark (page 138). The sling well is marked “OI” which is and Inland mark (page 108-109). The right side of the butt is marked with a “crossed cannons” cartouche. The bottom of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a “boxed” Arsenal Rebuild stamp from the Rock Island Armory “RIA / EB” (page 181). The bottom of the stock is marked “I” in white paint. The magazine is marked “G-Q” which is a Quality Hardware mark (page 142 -143).

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type II adjustable aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type II barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows small scratches, discoloration from oxidation, and surface erosion. The wood shows several scrapes & scratches. Some have damaged small portions of the surface wood. These marks have been oiled over. The butt shows several small spots of mildew. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Arsenal Rebuild

Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are grey. The rifling is sharp. There is fouling and intermittent erosion in the grooves and at the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.9.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, small scrapes, and light thinning on the leading edges of the metal. The top of the barrel shows a spot of thinning. The right side of the receiver & bolt show light thinning consistent with cycling. Most of the markings are deep. The barrel markings are somewhat faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a 15 round magazine. It shows scratches, thinning, and surface erosion. It is in about Good condition.
The 15 round magazine is not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.

Our Assessment: This Matching Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1944. At some point it was Arsenal Rebuilt by the Rock Island Armory. Despite being rebuilt, this M1 Carbine uses all Inland parts. The magazine was made by a different manufacturer, but Inland maganes are readily available. This Matching Inland M1 Carbine will add nicely to a WWII collection. Good luck.
