Markings: There is no import mark.The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 5274124” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 4 – 44” and “P”. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked “HI” which is an Inland mark (page 89). The magazine release is marked “M” and “EI” which is an Inland mark (pages 100-101). The smooth push button safety is unmarked which is consistent with Inland and others (page 95). The inside of the operating slide is marked “PI” which is an Inland mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “2” (a production mark) and “OI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked “I.R.CO. / 7160060” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 29 & 184). The Type II barrel band is marked “ll” which was used by Inland and IBM (page 59). The interior of the handguard is unmarked (page 138). The sling well is unmarked (page 108). The left side of the buttstock is marked with a 1973 dated, Italian Arsenal Rebuild stamp “star / FAT / 73” (Fabbrica d’ Armi a Terni, page 194). The rear of the aftermarket magazine is marked “MADE IN / U.S.A.”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type II fully adjustable aperture.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type II barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows several scrapes & scratches as well as thinning & oxidation. The bottom of the forearm shows long deep scrapes. The metal shows several other scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. These marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: The lands are bright, the grooves are semi bright, and the rifling is sharp. The muzzle and the grooves near the muzzle are grey. There is fouling and intermittent light erosion at the muzzle and in the grooves near the muzzle. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.9.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches, and discoloration from oxidation. The top of the rear sight, bottom of the trigger guard, and the bottom of the barrel each show small areas of light surface erosion. The right side of the receiver and bolt show thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with an aftermarket 10 round magazine and a green canvas sling. The magazine shows several scrapes & scuffs. It is in about Very Good Plus condition. The sling is marked ”MRT 9-62” on both metal tabs. The tabs show scratches and oxidation. The canvas shows light discoloration. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.

Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1944. It is still in Very Good condition and has deep marks on the metal & wood. This M1 Carbine has been rebuilt but retains many of its original Inland parts. This M1 carbine may have served in Italy after WWII as the stock is marked with an Italian Arsenal Rebuild cartouche. The rifle comes with a sling and an aftermarket 10 round magazine.
