Markings: There is no import mark.The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 3085000” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 12 – 43” and “P”. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked “HI” which is an Inland mark (page 89). The magazine release is marked “M” (faded) and “WI” which is an Inland mark (pages 100-101). The smooth push button safety is unmarked which is consistent with Inland and others (page 93). The inside of the operating slide is marked “PI” which is an Inland mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “I” and “AI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The left side of the Type I rear sight is marked “S” which was used by Inland and others (page 29). The Type IA barrel band is marked “UI” which is an Inland mark (page 59). The interior of the handguard is marked “P J” which is not listed in our reference material (page 138). Our research indicates that this is a wartime replacement handguard made by a subcontractor. The sling well is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 108). The right side of the buttstock is marked with a Winchester acceptance mark “W.R.A. / G.H.D.” next to a “crossed cannons” cartouche (page 120). The face of the grip is marked “P”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type I flip up, dual aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type IA barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The refinished buttplate has small dents and surface erosion showing through the finish. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Some have damaged small portions of the surface wood. There is a chip missing next to the oiler cutout. Most of the marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Bore Condition: The lands are bright and the grooves are semi bright. The muzzle & the grooves near the muzzle are light grey.  The rifling is crisp. There is fouling and light erosion at the muzzle and in the grooves near the muzzle. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, light scrapes & small scratches. The right side of the receiver & front of the bolt show thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is No magazine.

Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1944. It is in nice shape for a WWII service rifle. It has lots of Inland markings on the metal as it uses Inland parts. The stock has nice markings too, but it is not an Inland stock. The action can be dropped into an Inland stock to make this a matching rifle…if you like.
