Markings: All serialized parts are matching “49”. The front of the frame is marked “3949 / K”. The left side of the receiver is marked “3949”. The chamber is marked “1917”. The right side of the receiver is marked with three crowned markings with the army proof mark. The bottom of the barrel is marked “3949 / K / 8.82”. The toggle train is marked “DWM”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated blade dovetailed to the ramp fixed to the muzzle. The rear sight is an adjustable sliding “V” notch fixed to the chamber.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered wood. The grips have minor handling wear with compression marks. The edges have been smoothed off. The checkering is well defined. A few peaks of the checkering has chipped off. The right panel has a chip towards the back strap. There are no cracks. The right grip panel is loose. Overall, the grips are in about Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is faint erosion in the bore. There is faint pitting in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 6.5 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 92% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling and storage wear. There are scratches and thinning throughout. The straw finish has muted in most places. There is finish loss on the edges of the receiver and on the barrel. There are spots of patina throughout. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in about Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this pistol. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This 1917 DWM Long P.08, commonly known as the Artillery Luger, is a classic Imperial German World War I service pistol produced by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken during the height of the Great War. The Lange Pistole 08 was developed to provide extended range capability for artillery crews and specialized troops, distinguished by its 8 inch barrel and adjustable rear sight graduated for distance. The 1917 chamber date places this example squarely within wartime production, and the DWM toggle marking, Imperial crown proofs, and matching serialized components reinforce its authenticity as a German Army–issued sidearm. The Artillery Luger occupies a significant place in WWI military history, representing one of the most iconic long-barreled service pistols ever fielded.
This example presents in good plus overall condition, retaining strong original blued finish with visible edge wear and thinning consistent with age and service. The strawed small parts have largely muted, as commonly encountered, and the bore remains bright with sharp rifling and only faint erosion and pitting noted. The checkered wood grips show honest wear with minor chipping and smoothing, and the right panel is loose but intact. Matching serialized parts throughout further enhance its desirability. Accompanied by a wood-bottom magazine, this 1917 DWM Artillery Luger stands as a historically significant and largely matching Imperial German sidearm from the First World War.
