Markings: There is no visible import mark. The gas cylinder lock screw is marked “HRA” which is a Harrington & Richardson part (page 115 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).
Receiver: “U.S. RIFLE / CAL. .30 M1 / H. & R. ARMS CO. / 5628087”
Trigger Group: “6528290—HRA N”- Correct for serial number (page 90).
Hammer: “HRA 5546008”– Correct for serial number (page 97).
Safety: “HRA” – Correct for serial number (page 104).
Follower: unmarked – Correct for serial number (page 84).
Receiver Leg: “N” and “6522891” – Correct for a 1954 H&R M1 Garand (page 30).
Op Rod: “635382 HRA” – Correct for serial number (page 72).
Bolt: “6528287 HRA / .U.”- A H&R part (page 53).
Barrel:“HRA 6535448 5 55 RS52”, “M”, “P” and with a Defense Eagle acceptance stamp – An H&R part (page 63).
The stock and sights are described below.
Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “DRC”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “HR A”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The bottom of the grip is marked with “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock above the trigger is with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp (page 129-130) which is correct for a 1954 M1 Garand..
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The buttplate shows light scrapes. The left side of the front handguard is missing edge wood at the barrel band. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches, & compression marks. Which have been oiled over. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The lands are bright and the grooves are semi bright. The grooves near the muzzle are light grey. The rifling is deep. There is fouling in the grooves which should clean up some. There is frosting in the grooves at the muzzle. The bore has an M.E. of 1.2. The throat has a T.E. of 2.0.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs & light scrapes. The trigger guard, top rear of the receiver, and front of the gas tube show a few small scratches. The right side of the receiver & front of the bolt show light thinning from cycling the action. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes in a green hard plastic case that is marked on both sides with “stars & stripes”, “CMP / www.theCMP.org”, the CMP seal “stars / eagle holding arrows”, and with other information. The interior of the case has foam pieces that show compression, soiling and small tears. The case has 4 latches and 3 reinforced locking holes. The case shows scrapes, light soiling, scratches, and a few small areas of discoloration. It is in about Very Good Plus condition. The rifle comes with a “Certificate of Authenticity” from the “CIVILIAN MARKSMANSHIP PROGRAM”. It lists the rifle’s serial number. The owner’s name has been covered with white out. The certificate is in about Very Good Plus condition. The rifle comes with an M1 Garand owner’s manual, safety manual, and an armorer’s tag. The manuals and tag show light creasing and light soiling. They are about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
The rifle has a green canvas sling attached. It shows light soiling and is in about Fine condition. The rifle comes with extra parts that include a follower, follower arm, bullet guide and spring. These items are in about Very Good Plus condition.
Our Assessment: This Harrington & Richardson M1 Garand was made back in 1954. It still looks great and has a strong bore. The rifle was purchased through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and comes with a CMP Certificate of Authenticity and a CMP hard case. It has lots of great markings on the metal and wood which include lots of H&R parts with drawing numbers that are correct for the rifle’s serial number. Only one H&R part drawing number doesn’t match up to the serial number. The bolt marking is “6528287 HRA” which was used for a previous group of serial numbers. The correct marking should be “6528287 H.R.A.”.
