Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The .380 ACP bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is some fouling.  There is no notable erosion. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

The three other barrels are heavily corroded at the chamber where the corrosion has eaten at the metal. The bores are bright and the rifling is sharp. Due to the amount of corrosion, these barrels are rendered inoperable.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 95% of its metal finish. There is some intermittent surface corrosion on the right side of the slide. There is some surface rust in the slide, on the side of the 9mm kurz chamber, and the side of the bolt head. The markings are clear. Overall this pistol is in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly both single and double action. The slide locks back on both an empty magazine and when there is no magazine. The slide is released by pulling the trigger or inserting a new magazine. This pistol has a thumb-safety and a magazine disconnect safety. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a complete, serial matching barrel kit with the 3 barrels as mentioned above and 4 magazines – one for each caliber.  The chambers and base plates all have heavy corrosion. The magazines are still functional but the barrels are rendered inoperable as the corrosion has eaten away at the metal. There is moisture damage.

Our Assessment: The Heckler & Koch HK4 is historically significant as HK’s first handgun design, introduced in 1967 and heavily inspired by the Mauser HSc. Designed by Alex Seidel, one of HK’s co-founders, the HK4 was a compact, double-action, blowback-operated pistol intended for both law enforcement and civilian markets. The pistol’s ergonomic lines, exposed hammer, and safety closely resemble the Mauser HSc, but HK modernized the design with improved manufacturing techniques and materials. The HK4 was unique in its modular design, allowing the user to easily swap between four different calibers .380 ACP (9mm Kurz), .32 ACP (7.65mm), .25 ACP (6.35mm), and .22 LR by changing the barrel, recoil spring, and magazine.

Though the HK4 was eventually phased out in favor of more modern HK pistols like the P7 and USP, it remains an important piece of HK history, marking the company’s transition from manufacturing military rifles to producing high-quality handguns. Its interchangeable caliber system was ahead of its time, and today, three barrel sets like this one are highly sought after by collectors. Despite the condition of the barrel set, the pistol in .380 ACP is fully serviceable and ready for the range. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
