Our Assessment: The Heckler & Koch SR9 was introduced in the late 1980s as a civilian sporting and target rifle derived from the proven G3 battle rifle platform. Produced in West Germany and imported through HK Inc. in Sterling, Virginia, the SR9 utilized the same roller-delayed blowback operating system that defined the G3 family while adapting the rifle to meet civilian import requirements of the period. The platform became particularly desirable among enthusiasts due to its compatibility with G3-pattern components and its mechanical similarity to the famed PSG1 precision rifle system. This example, manufactured in 1990 and marked with the Ulm proof and West German origin, represents one of the early civilian variants produced before later import restrictions further limited availability. Chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, also commonly known as .308 Winchester in civilian sporting use, the SR9 delivers the power and ballistic performance associated with the NATO service cartridge introduced in the 1950s. This rifle retains approximately 99 percent of its original black enamel finish with only faint handling marks and minimal operational wear visible. The polygonal chrome-lined bore is very bright with smooth rifling surfaces typical of HK polygonal barrels and no visible erosion, earning a rating of 9.75 out of 10. The three-piece polymer furniture set remains in Excellent condition with the G3 bipod handguard and included bipod installed. The rifle is also equipped with a PSG1 trigger pack and currently measures a bolt gap of approximately 0.014 inches.
Mechanically, the roller-delayed action functions correctly and cycles as expected for the HK pattern design. The pins remain unmarred and the receiver markings remain crisp and legible. Included with the rifle are the original SR9 furniture and trigger pack, eight magazines consisting of aluminum, steel, and Thermold examples, along with the original box and paperwork. Overall, this 1990 HK SR9 stands as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a West German HK precision-oriented sporting rifle that bridges the gap between the classic G3 battle rifle and the renowned PSG1 precision system. -R.E.
