Markings: There is no import mark. The gas cylinder lock screw is marked “HRA” which is a Harrington & Richardson part (page 115 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).

The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “HRA-W”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “HR A”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The face of the grip is marked with 2 “P” proofs that are faded and double stamped. The left side of the buttstock is marked “AN” which is an inspector’s stamp from the Anniston Arsenal (page 135).
The oil stained hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nosecaps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged metal door for storage in the buttstock. The buttplate shows scratches, discoloration from oxidation, and light surface erosion. The right side of the stock shows a small filled surface repair, below the receiver.  The wood shows several scrapes and scratches. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The grooves near the muzzle are semi bright. The rifling is deep. There is fouling and intermittent light erosion in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore has an M.E. of 1. The throat has a T.E. of 2.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 96% of its finish. The metal shows scuffs and light scrapes. The gas tube assembly, front of the barrel, and bottom metal also show scrapes & small scratches. The right side of the receiver and the bolt show light thinning from cycling. The markings on the metal are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a green canvas sling marked “MRT / DEC 1953”. It shows light discoloration & soiling on the canvas as well as scrapes & oxidation on the metal. It is in about Very Good Plus condition.

Our Assessment: This Harrington & Richardson Arms M1 Garand was made back in 1954. The action uses all Harrington & Richardson parts so it has lots of little “HRA” markings on the metal. Even the gas cylinder lock screw and rear sight are marked “HRA”. This Cold War era Military service rifle is almost 70 years old. It looks good and has a strong bright bore. This is a nice H&R M1 Garand to add to your Military collection. It should do well out at the range.
