The gas cylinder lock screw is marked “HRA” which is a Harrington & Richardson part (page 115 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).

Trigger Group: “6528290—HRA N”- (Harrington & Richardson).

Hammer: “HRA C5546008”– (Harrington & Richardson).

Follower: unmarked – Used by all 4 Garand manufacturers.

Receiver Leg: “W / 6528291” – (Harrington & Richardson).

Op Rod: “635382 HRA” – (Harrington & Richardson).

Bolt: “6528287 HRA / .U.”- A Harrington & Richardson part subcontracted by Underwood.

Barrel: “&”, “LMR D6535448 12 54 A39”, a hardness punch stamp, “M” and with a Defense Eagle acceptance stamp “sideways B” – (Line Material Company).

The stock and sight are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “HRA-W”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “HR A”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The face of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp. The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nosecaps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged metal door for storage in the buttstock. The buttplate has some minor fading on the outside of the checkered pattern. The wood shows infrequent dings on the stock with a more notable ding to the left of the trigger. There is wear at the toe. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good-Plus overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. The muzzle has some oxidization. The rifling is sharp. The bore has an M.E. of 2 . The throat has a T.E. of 3.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 95% of its finish. The metal shows light small scratches on the barrel. There is subtle erosion in the left side of the receiver leg. The edges of the trigger guard show light thinning. There is some evidence of thinning on the op rod. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Harrington & Richardson Arms M1 Garand was made back in 1954. It uses mainly Harrington & Richardson parts so it has lots of little “HRA” markings on the metal. Even the gas cylinder lock screw and rear sights are marked “HRA”. The only part that isn’t labeled as Harrington & Richardson was the LMR barrel. However, LMR had some of their barrels used for Harrington & Richardson Garands. This is a highly collectible rifle that is ideal for a Garand collection. Good Luck!
