Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose cap, two sling loops, stacking loop, and a metal butt plate with hinged metal door for storage in the buttstock. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood has been lightly sanded and refinished and shows scattered marks, scratches, discolored spots and compressions. The left flank of the stock has some residue on it that appears to be from maybe packing tape. The handguards have some small chips as does the left side nose, and right side of the stock. The forward handguard has a crack forming from the band. The butt plate has lost most of its finish and shows some surface rust forming in the checkering with some rub wear and dings around the edges. The door spring is strong. Overall the stock rates in Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is some barely visible pitting with fouling in the last third of the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of 2 and a throat erosion of about 2. The CMP grading tag shows a throat of 2 and muzzle of 2. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its finish. The majority of the finish loss is thinning on the exposed portion of the barrel and the trigger guard. The bolt and action show some finish loss on the friction surfaces. Pitting is visible on the clip latch underneath the refinish. The op rod near the catch shows some surface rust. The hammer and trigger group show some scattered surface rust as well. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Good+-Very Good condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a CMP grading tag and sling.

Our Assessment: This Harrington & Richardson (H&R) M1 Garand, manufactured in 1954, is a post-WWII production rifle built during the Korean War rearmament period. It features a 1954 dated LMR (Line Material Corporation) barrel, a combination valued by collectors for its historical accuracy and quality. The rifle was refurbished and sold as a Field Grade by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) indicating it was brought to mechanically sound, shootable condition while remaining true to its military heritage.

Harrington & Richardson was one of two companies contracted to produce M1 Garands in the 1950s, alongside International Harvester. H&R was known for producing reliable and high-quality rifles that adhered closely to original wartime specifications. LMR barrels, produced by the Line Material Corporation of Birmingham, Alabama, were highly regarded for their excellent metallurgy and consistent accuracy, often considered superior to many other postwar barrels. These rifles helped maintain U.S. military readiness during the Cold War and were often issued to allied nations. The M1 Garand’s enduring design, praised by General Patton as “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” remained influential well into the 1960s, and rifles like this H&R exemplify the lasting legacy of American arms manufacturing.
