Our Assessment: The Great Western Arms Company was born out of the post-WWII demand for western-style revolvers, especially as interest in cowboy films and TV surged in the 1950s. These revolvers were the first domestically produced single-action revolvers to hit the U.S. market after Colt temporarily ceased production of the Single Action Army. Built in California and designed to echo the iconic Colt SAA, these pistols quickly gained a cult following, especially among Hollywood stars and film armorers.
This example is chambered in the uncommon “.357 Atomic,” a hot-loaded .357 Magnum wildcat round developed during the era for maximum performance. While modern shooters should exercise caution regarding the use of true .357 Atomic loads, this revolver is functionally compatible with standard .357 Magnum ammunition. Its tall front sight, smooth faux ivory grips, and 7.5″ barrel all nod to its frontier inspiration.
Collectors of classic Western revolvers and fans of vintage Americana will find this piece especially desirable. Its well-preserved finish, sharp markings, and historical importance make it an excellent addition to any C&R collection or Western-style lineup.
