Our Assessment: This contemporary flintlock rifle built around a G.R. Douglas barrel reflects the late twentieth-century revival of traditional American longrifle craftsmanship. G.R. Douglas barrels were widely respected among custom builders for their accuracy and quality rifling, and the 43 inch barrel length paired with a .45 caliber bore suggests a rifle intended for both target shooting and traditional hunting applications. The attribution “P. Hileman Fecit” indicates hand craftsmanship rather than factory production, reinforcing the rifle’s custom nature. The architecture, including its curved comb with cheekpiece, brass furniture, and extended barrel profile, echoes classic American longrifle influences while remaining a modern build.
This example presents in good overall condition with an excellent walnut stock showing minimal wear and strong structural integrity. The brass hardware exhibits light oxidation, and the browned metal finish has largely transitioned toward a worn patina, leaving much of the barrel and components in the white. The bore remains mostly bright with sharp rifling and light erosion noted. Mechanically, the flintlock functions correctly with a crisp set trigger. Accompanied by its ramrod, cleaning tools stored in the buttstock compartment, and flint, this rifle stands as a well-built modern interpretation of a traditional black powder longrifle, combining custom craftsmanship with practical usability.
