Many military Antique and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. There is some light wear from use throughout. The barrel band and forend cap are worn and patinated. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as C&R.

Our Assessment: The German Wehrmanns Gewehr 98 is a historically significant bolt-action rifle that reflects the creativity and adaptability of German firearms manufacturers during a period of severe restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. Chambered in 8.15x46mmR, this rifle was specifically designed for civilian marksmanship training and competition, as Germany sought to maintain shooting proficiency among its population despite limitations on military arms production. These rifles were often reworked from surplus Gewehr 98 military rifles or produced as new commercial firearms, showcasing the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the period. The 8.15x46mmR cartridge, a popular round for precision shooting in Germany, was specifically chosen for these rifles due to its excellent accuracy and suitability for competition. The Wehrmanns Gewehr was widely used by civilian shooting clubs, or Schützenvereine, which were a cornerstone of German marksmanship culture. These organizations not only promoted shooting as a sport but also maintained a pool of skilled marksmen who could be called upon if needed for national defense. The Wehrmanns Gewehr, with its simplified design and focus on precision, became a favorite among competitive shooters and played a vital role in preserving Germany’s shooting traditions during a challenging time.

For collectors and enthusiasts, the Wehrmanns Gewehr 98 represents a unique piece of firearm history that bridges the gap between military and civilian use. Its origins as a post-war adaptation of the Gewehr 98 make it an intriguing artifact of Germany’s interwar period, while its chambering in 8.15x46mmR highlights its role in promoting marksmanship and competition. Whether admired for its historical significance, its craftsmanship, or its role in preserving shooting skills during an era of disarmament, the Wehrmanns Gewehr is a compelling rifle that continues to appeal to those who value both precision and history. It stands as a testament to the resilience of German shooting culture and the enduring legacy of the Mauser design.
