Markings: There is an import mark on the barrel that reads “K98 GERMANY 8MM / C.A.I. ST. ALB. VT.”. The top of the receiver is marked “dot”, German inspection stamp “eagle / 63”, and “1944”. The left side of the receiver is marked with a Nazi “eagle / swastika”, with the serial number, “X” and “Mod. 98”. The right side of the receiver is marked with two “eagle / 63” inspection stamps. The left side of the barrel shank is marked “X”, “2664 / am” and has “eagle / swastika”. The floorplate, floorplate tang, bolt body, top rear of the bolt, underside of the rear sight and safety are all electro penciled “2664”. The top of the rear sight base is marked “2” and with two “eagle” over faded numbers, the bottom of the slider is marked “24” and “eagle / 623”. The underside of the rear sight is marked “eagle / 18” and “2394”. The underside of the bolt handle is marked “eagle / 655” twice. The safety is marked “E”. The bottom of the cocking piece is marked “V”. The extractor is marked “16” at the front and “eagle / 655” on the collar. The left of the barrel band is marked “3946” and the right is marked “eagle / WaA63”. The nosecap is marked with an eagle over faded numbers and “88”. The top of the bolt release is marked “eagle / 214” and “62”. The magazine follower is marked with an eagle over faded numbers and “7”. The front floorplate screw is marked “85”. The left of the buttstock is stamped “1.TRZ / 1915”. There are stamped triangles on the bottom of the forend and front of the pistol grip.
Barrel Length: Approximately 23 ¾ Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set atop a small ramped base. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding sight escalator assembly marked from “1-20”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The laminate wood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose cap, hole for a cleaning rod (not included), barrel band with sling bar, scallop for the bolt handle, through bolt, slingwell, sling pass through, domed washer and a metal buttplate. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches, and compression marks that have been oiled over. There is a little crack on the bottom of the wrist at the trigger guard tang on the left side. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate is bright and has scattered little nicks and a few spots of discoloration from previous oxidation. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild
Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is deep and strong. There is erosion in the bore, heaviest against the lands.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The bottom metal is missing the locking screws. There is some scattered surface frost with a few infrequent spots of larger surface oxidation. There are a few little marks through the finish. The extractor and bolt release are plum. There are a few little dings under the finish. The screws show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Nazi marked German Mauser K98 was made at Waffenwerke Brunn back in 1944. It most likely saw service during the war and still has Nazi markings including “eagles”, “swastikas”, and Nazi Waffenamts. The top of the receiver and barrel both have an “X” which is a Russian capture mark. After WWII the Russians rebuilt captured K98 rifles and rebuilt them prior to placing the rifles into storage. This K98 looks good and can still put plenty of 8mm downrange. Please see our photos and good luck!
