Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked with a German inspection stamp that was used by Mauser Obendorf “eagle / 135”, “byf”, and “44”. The left side of the receiver is marked with a Nazi “eagle / swastika” and “Mod. 98”. The right side of the receiver is marked with 2 “eagle / 135” inspection stamps. The barrel shank is marked with a Nazi “eagle / swastika” (restamped and partially stamped on the rear sight base), with the serial number, “4 4 D 5 8 4”, and with an “eagle / 135” inspection stamp. The right side of the rear sight base is marked with an “eagle / 135” inspection stamp. The bottom metal is marked “byf” twice, with 3 “eagle / 135” inspection stamps, and with the serial number (restamped). The rear of the bolt assembly is marked with the last 4 digits of the serial number in 4 different places. These markings have all been restamped as other faint numbers are visible (under magnification) below the new numbers. The right side of the butt is marked with what appears to be a faded “eagle” Waffenamt. The tail end of the sling is marked “L.L.G. / Thuringer / 1942”.
Barrel Length: Approximately 23 ¾ Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set atop a small ramped base and under a removable protective hood. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding sight escalator assembly marked from “1-20”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The laminate stock has a pistol grip, metal nose cap, hole for the included cleaning rod, barrel band with sling bar, scallop for the bolt handle, through bolt, sling well, sling pass through, domed washer, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scratches, small dents, oxidation, and pin prick surface erosion. The refinished nosecap has oxidation showing through the finish. It shows several small scrapes. The barrel band shows discoloration. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Many have damaged or removed small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Good to Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright. The grooves near the muzzle are light grey. The rifling is deep. There is fouling and light erosion in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up a bit.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish as refinished. Small scratches and areas of oxidation show through the new finish. The barrel shows light scrapes, discoloration, and some light surface erosion. The bottom metal shows scrapes, thinning, discoloration, and spots of light surface erosion. The right side of the receiver and the bolt each show thinning from cycling. The extractor shows discoloration. The screw heads show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a brown leather sling. It shows scrapes, creasing, and discoloration. The metal buckle shows scrapes & oxidation. The leather covering the buckle shows fraying. It is in about Good condition.
Our Assessment: This WWII Nazi marked German K98 was made at the Mauser Oberndorf factory in Germany back in 1944. It has nice markings on the metal including “eagle / swastika” marks on the receiver & barrel as well as other small German “eagle” inspection stamps. The metal has been refinished and many of the markings have been restamped. This German K98 has a nice bore for a Military service rifle that is over 75 years old. It will add to your WWII or Mauser collection.
