Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “243” and  “1939”. The left side of the barrel shank is marked with a Nazi “eagle / swastika” and with the serial number. The left side of the receiver is marked with a Nazi “eagle / swastika”, with the serial number, and “Mod.98”. The right side of the receiver is marked with three German “eagle / 26” inspection stamps. The left side of the barrel shank is marked with 2 German “eagle / 26” inspection stamps. The top of the barrel shank is marked “7.9”.  The top of the bolt handle, bottom of the buttstock, and rear of the butt plate are each marked with the serial number. The rear of the bolt assembly (3 places), underside of the handguard, nosecap, barrel band, rear sight ladder, rear sight base, and bottom metal (twice) are each marked with the  serial number (no letter suffix). The face of the nosecap, magazine follower, bolt release lever, extractor, and bottom metal screws are each marked with the last 2 digits of the serial number. Most of the metal parts are marked with “eagle / 26” inspection stamps including the stock through bolt and domed washer. The bottom and right side of the butt are marked with faded Nazi “eagle / swastika” stampings.

Barrel Length: Approximately 23 ¾ Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set atop a small ramped base and under a removable protective hood. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding sight escalator assembly marked from “1-20”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The laminate stock has a pistol grip, scallop for the bolt handle, nose cap with bayonet lug, hole for the included cleaning rod, barrel band with sling bar, through bolt, slingwell, sling pass through, domed washer, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate has been treated with cold blue. It shows scratches, discoloration, and cleaned surface erosion. The barrel band & nose cap show scrapes & discoloration. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Several have damaged or removed small portions of the surface wood. These marks have been oiled. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original. The metal has been treated with cold blue.

Bore Condition: The grooves are gray and the rifling is deep. There is fouling and erosion in the grooves. The fouling should clean up some.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its current metal finish. The metal has been treated with cold blue. Small scratches and areas of oxidation show through the cold blue finish. The metal shows scrapes & scratches as well as discoloration from oxidation and from the cold blue. The barrel shows scrapes, thinning, and discoloration from oxidation under the handguard. The screw heads show moderate use. The markings on the metal are deep. The stock markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a leather K98 sling. The leather shows scrapes, surface cracking, and discoloration. The metal shows scrapes, oxidation, and tape residue. It is in Very Good condition.

Our Assessment: This Nazi Germany Mauser K98 was made at Mauser Werke AG, Borsigwalde back in 1939. It was around for WWII and most likely saw service during the war. The rifle has great markings on the metal which include Nazi “eagle / swastika” stampings and lots of matching numbers. A matching K98 is a rare find and will add nicely to your WWII or Military collection.
