Our Assessment: The French St. Étienne Model 1873 is a historic revolver that served as the standard sidearm for the French military from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Designed as a robust and reliable service revolver, the MLE 1873 was chambered for the 11x17mmR cartridge and was issued primarily to officers and non-commissioned officers in both the Army and Navy. Despite its heavy steel frame, it was well-regarded for its durability and ease of maintenance.
Manufactured in 1893, this example is an antique and a later-production variant of the MLE 1873. By this time, advancements in revolver technology were leading to more modern designs, but the MLE 1873 remained in service for decades, particularly in colonial forces and reserves. Its solid construction and unique design make it a fascinating piece of military history.
For collectors of European military firearms, this revolver represents an important transitional period in French small arms development. Whether as a display piece, a collector’s treasure, or for historical study, this revolver holds a place in history. Please see our high-quality photos and good luck on your bid! -M.C.
