Our Assessment: The MAS Modèle 1936 served as the backbone of the French infantry during the most turbulent years of the 20th century, from the fall of France in WWII to the bitter colonial struggles in Indochina and Algeria. Its no-nonsense design, short profile, and peep sight system were distinctly modern compared to many of its contemporaries. Notably, its forward-angled bolt handle and in-line stock made for rapid and instinctive cycling, ideal for field conditions.

This rifle bears a 1939 barrel date, placing it among the early wartime production by MAS at Saint-Étienne. Though it has been refinished in post-service black paint—a common practice among depot-refurbished arms—it still shows clear markings and strong mechanical integrity. The bright bore, sharp rifling, and sound stock all suggest a rifle that was stored or refurbished for potential later use, rather than worn down in combat.

For collectors of WWII French weaponry, postwar colonial arms, or enthusiasts looking to add a rugged bolt gun to their military surplus lineup, this MAS 36 is a solid and affordable example with historical value and distinctive aesthetics.
