Our Assessment: Freedom Arms revolvers have long stood as the gold standard for precision single-action wheelguns, and this Premier Grade Model 1997 in .17 HMR carries on that legacy in a unique rimfire configuration. Built on the smaller-frame 1997 platform, it offers the same tight lockup, crisp trigger, and exacting tolerances that collectors and shooters expect from the Freedom, Wyoming manufacturer—but chambered in the high-velocity .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire cartridge. This combination provides an exceptionally flat-shooting revolver that is both mechanically impressive and highly practical for small game or precision target shooting.
This example features a 5 1/2″ round stainless barrel paired with adjustable target sights, ensuring both rugged durability and fine-tuned accuracy. The revolver remains in Excellent condition with about 99% of its original stainless finish intact, only showing the faintest signs of handling and a bit of light fouling in the bore and chambers. The laminated hardwood grips complement the brushed stainless steel, offering both strength and a clean aesthetic. The bore is sharp and bright, rating 9.5/10, further underscoring the revolver’s accuracy potential.
For the collector, this Premier Grade Model 1997 is an uncommon variant in an equally uncommon caliber, making it an intriguing addition to any Freedom Arms lineup. For the shooter, it delivers the unmatched craftsmanship and accuracy of Freedom Arms with the speed and precision of the .17 HMR. Whether displayed as part of a fine revolver collection or taken to the range for precision work, this example represents the best of American single-action craftsmanship in a modern rimfire package.
