Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “F.I.E. CORP. MIAMI FLA USA / READ WARNINGS BEFORE USING / MANUAL FREE F.I.E. MIAMI FLA 33054”. On the bottom of the receiver are several proof markings, including “AI” inside a square outline which signals the year of proof. The right side of the receiver is marked “S.P.A.S. 12 L. FRANCHI S.P.A. – BRESCIA MADE IN ITALY”.

Barrel Length: 20”, 24” with Improved Cylinder choke installed. 

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a non-adjustable blade integral to the barrel. The rear sight is a non-adjustable circular aperture sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a folding metal stock with a J-Hook, and a polymer pistol grip & forend. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks show light signs of wear, with some light and minor scratches and dings scattered throughout. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Fine to Excellent condition. 

Type of Finish: Black Anodized

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows operational wear on the heat shield from operation of the pump. There are light scattered scratches and dings throughout the metal surfaces. The markings are clear and legible. The pins are unmarred. Overall, this shotgun rates in Very Good condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety and the trigger. We have not fired this shotgun, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The SPAS-12 (Special Purpose Automatic Shotgun) stands as one of the most recognizable combat shotguns ever manufactured, and this 1982 example, imported by F.I.E. of Miami, delivers both the iconic presence and rugged utility collectors and enthusiasts crave. Built by Franchi in Italy, the SPAS-12 was designed from the outset as a dual-mode tactical shotgun, capable of operating in both semi-automatic and pump-action modes—a feature developed specifically for reliable function with specialty loads like less-lethal and low-pressure rounds. This makes the SPAS-12 one of the most versatile and forward-thinking tactical shotguns of the 20th century.

This example sports the coveted folding metal stock with hook, often referred to as the “J-Hook,” a design element made famous in both military service and pop culture. From Jurassic Park to Terminator, the folding stock variant helped cement the SPAS-12’s reputation as the ultimate ‘combat shotgun.’ The stock on this example is in Very Good to Excellent condition, with only minor signs of use. Operational wear is minimal, with most finish loss appearing only where you’d expect it—on the heat shield beneath the pump arm.

Mechanically, this shotgun is in excellent condition, retaining about 95% of its original finish, and showing only minor handling marks from its decades of service and storage. The bore is bright, and while there’s some light fouling, there is no visible erosion, affirming that this example was properly stored and maintained. The barrel retains its original open cylinder configuration, optimal for tactical and defensive applications.

For collectors, this is a standout Cold War-era import. For shooters, it remains a flexible and formidable design. And for anyone in between, it’s a classic piece of military-industrial engineering that will only continue to climb in desirability. SPAS-12s with intact original folding stocks, clean finish, and functional action are becoming increasingly scarce—and this is one of the cleaner specimens we’ve seen on the market.
