Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade which is dovetailed into a serrated ramp base that is fixed to the barrel; the base is slotted for a hood that is not included. The rear sight is a folding U-notch leaf adjustable for elevation dovetailed in a drift adjustable base that is screwed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is equipped with a two-piece Burris rail and rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one piece checkered walnut with a Monte Carlo comb with cheekpiece, pistol grip, two thru-bolts, sling studs, and a brown ventilated Browning recoil pad. There is notable finish loss along the left side of the forend, below the receiver, and lower right edge, along the lower metal. There are some crazing lines. Finish loss is also visible along the lower edge of the pistol grip and crazing lines at the front of the forend with some bubbling and finish loss. There are some nicks, light scuffs, and compressions throughout the wood. The checkering is generally well defined. These stocks were known to have salt brine between the years 1967-1969. This example was manufactured well before, in 1963. The LOP measures 13 7/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad has become somewhat firm with age yet remains mostly pliable, showing rub wear on the face and edges. The stock rates in about Good-Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is light erosion on the lands. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 86% of its metal finish. There is finish loss and erosion on the crown. There are also notable areas of finish loss with scuffs and scratches at about the midway point on the barrel. There is minor buildup in many of the crevices. There is some scattered light erosion on the bolt. The lower metal shows scattered tiny nicks and the trigger guard shows faint thinning. The screw heads are faintly tool marked and the markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The previously mentioned sight base and rings are included.

Our Assessment: The High-Power was offered in three grades, including Safari, Medallion and Olympian. In spite of the Safari being the base rifle, it was a beauty with select walnut stock wood and hand-cut checkering. The trigger guard and floorplate were lightly engraved and highlighted with gold. This was a beautiful rifle when it was made 60 years ago, and is still a good looking rifle to this day. In addition to its good looks, it has a strong FN Mauser style action. With its .375 H&H Magnum chambering, it is the perfect rifle for medium-to-large game hunting, including African large cats. Please see our photos and good luck!
