Barrel Length: 23 1/2″
Choke: The monoblock is marked as Improved Modified, but the choke measures out as Full on our choke gauge. Fixed.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a black blade, inserted into the vent rib. The rear sight is a flip-up square notch sight, pinned to the barrel rib. The receiver is grooved and notched for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered walnut stock set, with a semi-pistol grip, fluted raised comb, rubber buttpad, and a checkered detachable forend. There are sling rings front and rear, with a leather sling attached. The LOP measures 13 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stocks show light wear, with scattered scratches, dings, and scuffs throughout. The checkering is well defined. The stock’s finish is largely intact, with only a couple small spots of thinning finish at the bottom of the semi-pistol grip, and at the back of the forend. The stocks fit tightly to the frame, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bores are bright, and neither have any visible erosion. There is some light fouling present in the 12 gauge bore, and that bore rates 9.5/10, in this writer’s opinion. There is some minor corrosion in the .30-06 bore, about 4″ down from the muzzle. In this writer’s opinion, the .30-06 bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This combination gun retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light corrosion on the muzzle crowns of the barrels, and freckling of surface corrosion scattered throughout the vent rib. Otherwise, the bluing is deep and dark throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The pins are unmarred. Overall, this combination gun rates in Good to Very Good condition. It should be noted that the brass parts on the leather sling are corroded as well.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the tang mounted safety, and the trigger mounted barrel selector. We did not fire this combination gun, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This combination gun comes with a plastic hard case, and the leather sling as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: Valmet’s 412 series stands among the finest over/under combination guns ever produced, reflecting the meticulous machining, robust lockwork, and practical field design that defined Finnish sporting arms of the late 20th century. The 412S, a streamlined version of the earlier, more ornate 412/512 models, became especially prized for its modularity, strong monoblock construction, and the ability to accept multiple barrel sets. This 1984 example pairs a .30-06 Springfield rifle barrel over a 12-gauge shotgun barrel, creating a versatile, all-purpose hunting tool tailored to European mixed-game shooting traditions as well as North American field conditions. Despite scattered cosmetic freckling on the vent rib and light corrosion at the muzzles, the gun remains in solid mechanical condition with tight lockup, crisp controls, and well-fitting walnut.
The .30-06 Springfield cartridge, introduced in 1906, is one of the most proven big-game rounds in history, offering deep penetration and reliable performance across a wide range of bullet weights. Combined with a 12-gauge 3″ chamber, capable of firing slugs, buckshot, or birdshot, this 412S offers the ability to take varmints, upland birds, hogs, deer, or even larger game with the appropriate load. The rifle bore’s minor corrosion near the muzzle is superficial in nature, and both bores remain bright with strong rifling in the .30-06 and clean walls in the 12-gauge tube. With its modular design, smooth action, rugged Finnish engineering, and scarce presence in the U.S. market, this Valmet 412S is a desirable and highly capable combination gun.
