Sights / Optics: The front sight is a steel bead dovetailed into a serrated and ramped base screwed to the top of the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable flip-up U-notch sight with a white triangle aiming reference, dovetailed to the barrel. The receiver is mounted with an OpTex 3-9×32 scope with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light wear, with a few scattered scratches throughout the scope’s finish. The windage turret cap is missing. Overall, the scope rates in Good condition. The scope is mounted on a one-piece base, and sits in 1” Weaver rings.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, vented rubber buttpad, and checkered pump/forend. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the rear of the buttpad. The stocks show moderate wear, with scratches, dings, and dents scattered throughout. There are scattered spots of missing finish throughout the buttstock. The checkering is mostly well defined. The stocks fit the frame tightly, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. The buttstock and the forend appear to have different finishes. Overall, the stocks rate in Fair to Good condition. There is a leather sling attached to the rifle.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light pitting in the front half of the barrel. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows finish thinning on the trigger guard, barrel, and the faux magazine tube and action bars from operation. There is also thinning finish on the detachable magazine, as well as some light patina on the magazine and faux magazine tube. The markings are clear and legible, and the engravings are sharp and vivid. The screw heads are sharp and the pins are unmarred. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the cross-bolt safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a total of one magazine, in Very Good condition, as well as the scope and sling as mentioned above.
Our Assessment:The Remington Model 760 Gamemaster was introduced in 1952 as the successor to the Model 141, combining the fast-handling familiarity of a pump shotgun with the precision and power of a centerfire rifle. Built on a machined steel receiver with a detachable box magazine and robust dual-action bars, the 760 became a mainstay among American hunters for its reliability and quick follow-up capability in the field. By the time this rifle left Ilion in October of 1954, Remington had already cemented its place as one of the premier makers of practical, dependable sporting arms for deer and big game hunters across North America.
Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this rifle takes advantage of one of the most proven and versatile cartridges ever developed. Adopted by the U.S. military in 1906 and long favored by sportsmen, the .30-06 offers excellent ballistic performance for everything from whitetail to elk. The engraved receiver scenes on this example — featuring a whitetail deer on the left and a grizzly bear on the right — elevate it beyond a typical field rifle, reflecting the artistry Remington occasionally brought to their mid-century sporting line. With about 70% of its original blued finish remaining, well-defined engraving, and a bright bore showing only light pitting in the forward half, this 1954 Gamemaster stands as both a handsome and functional piece of Remington history.
Equipped with a period OpTex 3–9×32 scope and its original detachable magazine, this rifle represents a fine balance of craftsmanship and utility from the golden age of American sporting arms. It remains a collectible early example of Remington’s pump-action lineage and a reminder of the era when style and field performance met in perfect harmony.
