The right side of the barrel is marked with a series of proof marks. The left side of the receiver is marked “REMINGTON / 367665”, and “GAMEMASTER / MODEL 760”. The left side of the receiver features an engraved whitetail deer/mountain scene, with surrounding scroll engraving. The left side of the receiver features a bighorn sheep/mountain scene, with surrounding scroll engraving. The barrel, top of the receiver, scope rings, bottom of the magazine and trigger guard also feature scroll engraving.

Barrel Length: 18 1/2″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramp, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is missing, but the rear sight ramp is still screwed to the barrel. The receiver is mounted with a one-piece Leupold-style base, with engraved 1” scope rings for optics.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered walnut stock set, with a semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, checkered metal buttplate, and a serrated pump grip/forend. The LOP measures 13 1/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks show light to moderate wear, with scattered scratches, dings and scuffs throughout both the buttstock and the forend. There are no chips or cracks. The stocks fit the frame tightly, with no play. Overall, the stocks rate in Good to Very Good condition.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: 1x 4rd Remington factory .270 Win. magazine, in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blued, Engraved

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light fouling present in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its existing metal refinish. The balance of the finish shows operational wear on the faux magazine tube and on the action bars from operation of the action. There are a few scattered scratches and dings throughout the metal surfaces, and some surface corrosion starting to form on the ramp for the rear sight. The markings are clear and legible. All of the engravings are deep, vivid, and attractive. The screw heads are sharp, and the pins are unmarred. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the engraved scope rings, as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 760 Gamemaster Carbine is a compact, fast-handling offshoot of Remington’s mid-century pump-action line, designed to bring the quick follow-up capability of the 760 to thick-country hunting where a full-length rifle is unwieldy. Remington’s Gamemaster examples combine utility with period styling, and this October 1960 EG-coded carbine marries that custom engraved aesthetic with a stout .270 Winchester chambering in a handy 18½? package — the sort of gun that balances brush-friendly handling with effective, ethical terminal performance at typical hunting distances.

Chambered in .270 Winchester, a cartridge long prized for its flat trajectory and excellent game-stopping performance on deer-sized game, this engraved carbine presents very well: the deep, vivid engraving remains sharp, the bore checks bright and rates 9.5/10, and the gun retains about 95% of its current refinish with only expected operational wear on the faux magazine tube and action bars. Mechanically the pump action and safety functioned during inspection, the factory 4-round magazine and engraved scope rings are included, and the stock and metal show only light-to-moderate handling marks consistent with honest field use. For a collector or hunter seeking an attractive, usable, custom example of Remington’s Gamemaster work in a brush-friendly carbine form, this 1960 .270 is a very appealing, ready-to-own package.
