Markings: The import mark on the barrel reads “NO.5 MK.1 .303 U-KING / C.A.I. ST. ALB. VT”. The barrel shank (under the wood) is marked with inspection stamps. The left side of the receiver is marked (faded) “No5 MK1 ROF (F) / 5/46 V 9283”. “ROF” is for Royal Ordnance Factory. The “F” is for Fazakerley. The right front of the receiver is marked with a faded “crowned” stamping”. The rear of the receiver has partial stampings on it. The rear of the bolt handle is marked with the serial number. The bottom of the forearm and bottom of the magazine have been restamped with the serial number. The bottom of the magazine is also marked with faded “numbers”. The bolt body is marked “k23”. The barrel band is marked “M 47 A” and with an “arrow head”. There are a few other small stampings on the rifle
The interior of the sling is marked “MEC 1943”.
The base of the bayonet blade is marked “R.F.I”. This is an Indian, Ishapore Rifle Factory mark.

Barrel Length: Approximately 20 ½ inches to the end of the flash hider.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade between two protective ears. The rear sight is a fixed aperture in the down position. When flipped up a second smaller elevation adjustable aperture is used on the sight ladder. The ladder is marked from “2 – 8”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The three piece stock has a straight grip with a finger groove, metal nose caps, barrel band with sling loop, sling well, and a metal & hard rubber buttplate with an attached sling bar. The rubber on the buttplate shows scrapes, scratches, and surface loss. The metal on the buttplate shows scrapes & surface erosion. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches & compression marks. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The grooves are dark and the rifling is deep. There is erosion present; mostly in the grooves.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish as refinished. Surface erosion and oxidation show through the new finish. The right side of the stock collar has vertical marks ground into it. This area shows discoloration from oxidation. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches, and areas of light discoloration. The screw heads show use. The markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle has a web sling attached and a magazine inserted. The sling shows soiling & discoloration on the webbing as well as oxidation & scrapes on the metal. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition. The refinished 10 round magazine has surface erosion and oxidation showing through the finish. It shows scrapes. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.
The rifle comes with a No.5 Mk1 Bayonet & Scabbard. The bayonet metal shows light scrapes & small scratches. The wood handle shows small handling marks. It is in about Fine condition. The scabbard shows several scuffs & light scrapes as well as small scratches at the tip & on the frog stud. It is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) Fazakerley No5 Mk1 is a true “Jungle Carbine”. It has a hollow bolt handle knob and scallops cut out of the receiver & barrel shank to reduce weight (we checked under the wood).
