Markings: There is an import mark on the right front of the receiver and a British Export mark on the barrel. The left side of the stock collar is marked “M47C” (the code for BSA Shirley), “1945”, with the serial number, and “TR” (the final inspection proof prior to being upgraded to a sniper by Holland & Holland). The left side of the receiver is marked (faded) “NO 4 MKI” and “ T” (signifying a No.32 telescope had been fitted, and the combination had met all inspections). The rear of the bolt handle is marked with the serial number. The bottom of the butt is marked “S51” which is a Holland & Holland mark. The top of the grip is marked with the scopes serial number “28244”. There are other small markings on the rifle.

The No.32 scope is marked “TEL. STG. No 32 MK III / OS. 2039 A / AK & S No28244 / 1945 / arrow head”, “W” in paint, and “B” in paint. The side of the scope base is marked with the rifle’s serial number.
The scope case is marked with the rifle’s serial number and the scope’s serial number.
The rear of the canvas binocular case is marked “M.E. Co. 1941 arrowhead”.
The binocular markings include “BINO PRISM No2 MKII”.
The front & back of the wood chest are both marked “CHEST S.A. No.1.5. Mk.I” in white paint. The stock has other markings on it including the rifle’s serial number which is on the end tag. The underside of the top door has a worn equipment list attached to it. Its markings include “EQUIPMENT, RIFLE, NO.4 (SNIPING)”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 25 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective ears. The rear flip up sight ladder normally uses a fixed aperture in the down position. The aperture was removed inorder to mount the scope.
The left side of the receiver has two threaded holes for accepting the scope base that is attached to the scope. The mounting screws are integral to the base. The scope is a fixed 3 power with a post & horizontal line reticle. The glass lens view is clear. The adjustment knobs turn. The scope tube shows scrapes & scratches as well as an area of thinning. The small screw heads show use.
The binoculars show scrapes, scratches, and thinning on the metal parts. The view is dim with several small flecks in the view.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 4 piece smooth wood with a straight grip, raised cheek piece, 2 nose caps, 2 barrel bands, 2 sling loops, and a brass buttplate with hinged door for storage. The raised cheek piece is secured by two screws. The butt shows sanding marks. The wood shows scattered scrapes and compression marks. Most of the marks are small or light. The LOP measures 13 1/4 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate shows light wear. The stocks rate in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition as refurbished.

Type of Finish: Black Gun Paint

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are light gray. The rifling is deep. There is erosion at the muzzle and in the grooves.
In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates are 7 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish as refinished. The metal shows scuffs, scrapes, and light thinning on the leading edges. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads show use. Some of the receiver markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action Does function correctly. This firearm has not been tested, these are used items. While we have performed a mechanical function check and noted any discrepancies we cannot guarantee the suitability of this firearm.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a No 32 scope assembly, No2 MKII binoculars and cases for each; see above.
The rifle also comes with a web sling and a 10-round magazine The magazine appears to function correctly.
The rifle, scope assembly and other accessories are stored in a wooden Transit Case with leather handle straps.

Our Assessment: This Enfield No.4 Mk1 T Sniper Rifle started out as an Enfield No.4 Mk1 made at BSA Shirley during WWII. It was selected for its inherent accuracy and then upgraded to sniper configuration by Holland & Holland. The rifle was eventually imported into the U.S. and is marked accordingly on the barrel and receiver. The rifle has since been refinished. It comes with accessories that include a No 32 scope assembly, No2 MKII binoculars and a wooden Transit Case.
The receiver, bolt handle, scope base, scope case, and transit case are each marked with the rifle’s serial number. The scope, top of the stock grip, and scope case are each marked with the scope’s serial number.
This is a nice Enfield Sniper package that will add to your collection.
