Sights / Optics: There is a bead sight set on the barrel at the muzzle.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock set is checkered walnut with a straight grip, straight comb, ebony tip forend, and shotgun style buttplate. There are some scattered compressions, dings, scuffs, and scratches. There are a few light scrapes that have damaged surface wood. The majority of the defects have colored with age. The checkering is strong and well-defined. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the case color buttplate. The plate has scuffs, scratches, finish loss, and areas of erosion. The stocks rate in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with only a few little areas of minor erosion and discoloration. In my opinion, this bore is a 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 85% of its metal finish. There are some areas of patina on the barrel. There are areas of thinning. There are some scattered spots of minor oxidation and discoloration from previous oxidation. There are some scattered scuffs and minor scratches. There are a few areas of erosion. There are light handling marks. There is finish wear on the edges. The markings are mostly light. The screwheads have light wear. The shotgun rates in about Fine condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Rolling Block was one of Remington’s most successful designs seeing use in numerous militaries the world over. In fact, it was such a hit production continued even when more modern options were available. In some countries, the Rolling Block saw years and years of hard use as their owners did not want to spend the money on bolt actions. One thing is for certain, the Rolling Block just works. It was chambered for numerous calibers and went through numerous design changes in its lifetime. There are military Rolling Blocks, small framed rimfires, large heavy barreled target rifles…even pistols!! This one is quite interesting and truly a beauty. The legend Norm Flayderman states that from 1870 into the 1890s, Remington built two versions of the Rolling Block as a shotgun using leftover military parts. The shotguns were available in 16 and 20 gauges and were dubbed the No. 1 and No. 2 shotgun. Either could be had with plain or Damascus barrels in either 30″ or 32″ lengths. This one is a beauty, it has a nice Remington case color receiver, checkered walnut stocks, and a Damascus barrel that I think is Remington’s pattern dubbed “Boston 2”. Simply put, this is a beautiful shotgun bound to improve any collection it joins! Please see our photos and good luck!
