Our Assessment: Built during the peak of Dan Wesson’s innovation out of Monson, Massachusetts, this Model 740 in .357 Maximum is a powerhouse of revolver engineering. Chambered in the high-pressure .357 Maximum cartridge, it was designed to push performance limits well beyond the .357 Magnum, and this revolver was purpose-built to handle it. The 8” barrel with full underlug and vent rib gives the revolver a distinctly serious look and provides excellent balance for offhand shooting or silhouette competition.
Mechanically, this example is outstanding. Lockup is tight, timing is precise, and the trigger is clean and crisp in both single and double action. The stainless finish remains at 99%, showing only the faintest hints of handling. The bores are pristine—bright and sharp with no erosion—suggesting minimal use, if any. The revolver retains its one-piece walnut grip adorned with the classic “D.W.” medallions, showing only minor dings and pressure marks. This example appears to have been extremely well cared for and likely spent more time in the safe than at the range.
Collectors and performance wheelgun fans alike will appreciate the rarity and significance of a clean Dan Wesson 740 in this condition. These revolvers were discontinued in the early 1990s, and examples this well-preserved are few and far between. For silhouette shooters, magnum revolver collectors, or anyone who appreciates precision and firepower in a revolver package, this one is tough to beat.
