Our Assessment:  The Sten Gun Mark II, one of the most iconic submachine guns of World War II, came to life out of sheer necessity. The British needed a mass-produced, inexpensive firearm that could be quickly supplied to troops following the mass equipment losses at Dunkirk. The result was the Sten series, named after its primary designers, Major Reginald Shepherd and Harold Turpin, along with the “EN” from Enfield, the Royal Small Arms Factory where it was produced. The Mark II, introduced in 1941, was the most commonly used version, with estimates suggesting over two million were made.

While the weapon was far from perfect—often criticized for its propensity to jam and its simplistic, even crude design—it had merits that made it invaluable during wartime. The Sten Mark II was lightweight, easily concealable, and could be produced with minimal materials and labor. It fired the ubiquitous 9mm Parabellum round, making it compatible with captured enemy ammunition. Because of its simplistic design, resistance fighters in occupied territories could also manufacture copies, making it a favorite for irregular forces.

Despite its drawbacks, the Sten Mark II holds a special place in military history. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when necessity drives innovation. The gun was used not only by British troops but also by various resistance groups across Europe, including the French Maquis and Norwegian Home Guard. The Sten Mark II wasn’t a symbol of refined craftsmanship, but it was a symbol of resistance and ingenuity, characteristics that were crucial in a time of desperate need.  This is a custom built Mark II with a few quirky feats but is sure to make a fun day at the range.
