Markings: The top of the barrel is marked with Ruger’s 2-Line warning & Southport address.

Barrel Length: 26” with radial muzzle brake.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a black patridge blade with a red stripe, dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable flip-up U-notch sight, dovetailed to the quarter rib. Mounted on the quarter rib is a Redfield 2-7x wide-angle scope with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light wear, with a few scattered dings and scuffs in the scope’s finish, and on the turret caps. Overall, the scope rates in Good condition. The scope sits in 1”stainless Ruger rings, and comes with Butler Creek brand flip-up covers.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece textured cast metal, with a semi-pistol grip,  raised monte carlo comb with cheekpiece, black rubber buttpad, and a schnabel tipped forend. The LOP measures 12 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with a few scattered dings in the bottom of the pistol grip, and on the tip of the forend. The stocks fit the frame tightly, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good condition. The heavily built cast metal stock brings the entire weight of the rifle and optic up to 13 lbs, 3 oz.

Type of Finish: Stainless

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows operational and storage wear, with scattered scratches throughout the barrel, receiver, and the lever/trigger guard. There is some light corrosion on the lever/trigger guard, and the falling block. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the tang safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope and scope covers as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 is Ruger’s purpose-built falling-block single-shot — a rigid, one-piece action prized for its clean sighting plane, rock-solid lockup, and inherent accuracy — and in heavy-bore calibers it becomes a straightforward, dependable tool for serious hunting. This 1979 stainless example in .458 Winchester Magnum pairs the No. 1’s simple, robust action with a long 26? barrel fitted with a radial muzzle brake and a heavy, cast-metal textured stock that gives the rifle a deliberate, safari-style presence. The cast stock and overall build push the assembled weight (rifle + optic) to about 13 lb. 3 oz., which, together with the brake, significantly mitigates felt recoil and will make this a comfortable, controlled platform for heavy-bore work despite the short (12½”) length of pull.

Chambered in .458 Win. Mag., this rifle is built for close-to-moderate-range work on the largest game; the single-shot falling-block format and superb bore (10/10) make it well suited to deliberate, one-shot disciplines where reliability and columnar accuracy matter. Cosmetically the stainless finish is strong overall (approximately 90% retained) with scattered light scratches and minor surface corrosion on the lever/trigger guard and falling block; the Redfield 2–7× scope, stainless Ruger rings and Butler Creek covers are included and present in Good condition. Mechanically the action and tang safety functioned correctly during inspection. Please check out our high quality photos, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
