Our Assessment: This custom left-handed Pennsylvania-style .40 caliber flintlock rifle is an attractive handmade piece that reflects the defining features of the classic longrifles carried throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. The 35″ brass barrel, raised-cheekpiece maple stock, and carved details all point toward a builder with an eye for traditional American architecture. The rifle’s .40 caliber bore places it squarely in the small-to-medium game realm—an historically appropriate and very popular caliber for target work, squirrels, and woodland hunting—while giving it excellent shootability and efficiency with patch-and-ball loads.

Condition is Fine overall, with only light handling marks and shallow surface wear associated with careful use and storage. The brass barrel and furniture show minor oxidation typical for the material, the maple stock is clean and well-fitted with no cracks or chips, and the bore remains bright with sharp rifling, rating about 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the lock functions properly at both half- and full-cock with a crisp frizzen and a clean trigger break. As a custom, unsigned rifle, it offers the charm of a one-of-a-kind build—an appealing piece for traditional shooters, collectors of contemporary longrifles, or anyone drawn to the artistry and handling of classic Pennsylvania patterns.
