Our Assessment: This custom Pedersoli rolling block target rifle represents a modern, purpose-built interpretation of one of the most respected single shot actions ever devised. Produced in Italy for Navy Arms during the late 20th century, these rifles were aimed squarely at the serious black powder cartridge rifle shooter who valued historical form paired with contemporary precision. The rolling block action, originally perfected in the 19th century, remains prized for its strength, simplicity, and superb lockup, and in this configuration it serves as a stable and confidence-inspiring foundation for long-range target work. The massive 34 inch heavy octagon barrel and substantial overall weight reflect a deliberate focus on balance, recoil control, and consistency on the firing line rather than portability. Chambered in .45-90, also known as .45 2 4/10, this rifle draws directly from the golden age of American long-range black powder competition. Introduced in the late 19th century, the .45-90 was favored by target shooters and buffalo hunters alike for its ability to drive heavy bullets with authority while maintaining excellent accuracy at extended distances. In a modern barrel of this quality, the cartridge remains highly capable and rewarding for dedicated reloaders. The sighting equipment reinforces the rifle’s competition intent, with a CSA Lee Shaver long range tang sight complemented by a hooded globe front sight with spirit level, providing the precision adjustments demanded by serious target shooters. The presence of a barrel-mounted buckhorn and ladder sight adds a traditional visual element while underscoring the rifle’s blend of historical styling and modern execution.
Conditionally, this example stands out as exceptionally well preserved. Retaining approximately 97 percent of its original finish, with vivid case colors and minimal handling marks, it presents closer to a carefully maintained competition rifle than a heavily used shooter. The bore is excellent, bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating an impressive 9.75 out of 10 and suggesting significant remaining service life. The walnut stock is clean and well-fitted, showing only light handling marks and maintaining crisp lines throughout. Taken together, this custom Pedersoli rolling block offers a compelling opportunity to acquire a refined, competition-ready black powder cartridge rifle that honors 19th century design while delivering modern precision and craftsmanship. -R.E.
