Our Assessment: This custom Ohio style percussion rifle reflects the distinctive regional longrifle traditions that developed in the Midwest during the mid nineteenth century, often associated with makers influenced by the Vincent family and related Ohio schools. Characterized by slender profiles, long octagonal barrels, and restrained yet elegant architecture, these rifles were typically built for accuracy and practicality rather than ornamentation. While the maker of this example is unknown, the overall form and execution clearly align with John Vincent–inspired Ohio patterns.

This rifle is chambered in .40 caliber and fitted with a 36 inch octagonal barrel bearing the dual stamp “D. Aubihl” on the top flat. The browned metal finish remains approximately 90 percent intact, with light handling and storage wear visible along with minor corrosion. The cherry stock is a notable feature, showing attractive grain and careful shaping, with a straight wrist, straight comb with cheek piece, steel nose cap, and brass buttplate. The wood shows moderate handling wear with compression marks and scratches but remains free of cracks or chips, presenting in very good overall condition with a compact length of pull measuring 12 to 13 inches.

The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light erosion, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the percussion action functions correctly. This rifle includes its ramrod and presents as a well executed custom Ohio style muzzleloader with strong traditional lines, solid condition, and evident care in both construction and preservation.
