Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with oak leaf relief carving on the extended slide handle and pistol grip, straight comb and ventilated brown rubber Duck Brand recoil absorbing pad. The stocks have some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is a repaired crack at the bottom-rear edge of the slide handle. There is a little more notable wear in the bottom-front of the grip. The LOP measures 14 1/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad, 13 3/8″ to the back of the wood. The pad has scattered wear and has hardened some with age. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good-plus condition as refinished and/or replaced.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished at the time of engraving. The rib is not original to the gun.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is a little stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 94% of its current metal finish. Most of the balance is light operational wear. There are a few scattered minor marks and a couple of spots of faint surface oxidation. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions Correctly. We did not fire this firearm. This shotgun will slam-fire as designed. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1912 was an improved version of John Moses Browning’s groundbreaking design, the Model 1897 pump action shotgun. While similar in most aspects to Browning’s design, several improvements were made by Winchester engineer Thomas Crossley Johnson. Johnson’s most notable improvement was to alter the action. While Browning had designed his m/1897 with an external hammer, Jonson modified the design with an internal hammer. The Model 1912 retained the distinct slam-fire action used on Browning’s original design.

This Winchester model 12 was manufactured in 1958 and has since been beautifully customized. The receiver and barrel have been scroll engraved with molded silver hunting dog and fowl scenes skillfully applied to each frame flat. Along with the custom carved stocks, the result is a visually striking gun that should still prove to be a great hunting piece. Per the consignor, this gun was engraved by Hamada & Son in Tokyo, Japan, a popular company among American servicemen stationed on the island. The shotgun retains a good bore and strong mechanics. This Winchester model 12 is equally suited to shooting clay pigeons, dropping birds or display. Please see our photos, good luck and happy bidding!
