Our Assessment:   The Colt Woodsman Second Series represents one of the most respected American rimfire pistols of the twentieth century, combining elegant design with exceptional balance and accuracy. Introduced in the postwar era, the Second Series reflected Colt’s refinement of John M. Browning’s original .22 automatic concept, incorporating a revised grip angle and improved ergonomics that distinguished it from the earlier First Series pistols. Produced in 1950, this example falls squarely within the Woodsman’s golden age, when it was widely favored by target shooters, outdoorsmen, and competitors for its precision and reliability.

This pistol retains approximately 80 percent of its original blued finish, with honest wear concentrated on the leading edges, top of the slide, muzzle and grip frame, where the finish has worn to the white from handling. Light nicks and scuffs are present but do not detract from the overall appearance, and the slide, frame, and barrel markings remain clear and legible. The factory checkered plastic grips with molded Rampant Colt show light handling wear and a few deeper dings at the bottoms, yet remain intact with well-defined checkering, presenting very well for a pistol of this age.

The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9.5 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, reflecting the smooth operation for which the Woodsman series is known. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, a cartridge long prized for accuracy and economy, the Woodsman earned its reputation as both a serious target pistol and an enjoyable sporting arm. As a Second Series example from 1950, complete with two magazines and a period leather holster, this pistol stands as a classic and highly regarded rimfire offering from Colt’s storied lineup.
