Our Assessment: This Colt Single Action Army, manufactured in 1920, is a classic example of the venerable “Peacemaker” chambered in the iconic .45 Colt cartridge. By the time this revolver left Hartford, Colt’s flagship single-action revolver had already cemented its place in American lore as a symbol of the frontier, lawmen, and cowboys alike. This 4.75″ barrel variant features the correct early 20th-century markings and retains matching serial numbers on the frame and grip frame. While the grips show wear and a small chip, they are authentic Colt checkered panels, and the left panel is personalized with a dated inscription from 1945—likely from a proud owner or serviceman returning home after WWII.
Although the revolver has seen significant use and retains only about 15% of its metal finish, the lines remain sharp and the markings are still clear, which speaks to the quality of Colt craftsmanship. The gun has been refinished at some point in its life, preserving its appearance while still showing honest signs of age. Mechanically, it remains functional, with a solid action that would still feel familiar to any Colt enthusiast. The bore, while showing some pitting and erosion, retains defined rifling and still rates a 7 out of 10, making this an attractive shooter or restoration candidate.
This revolver would make a fine addition to any collection centered around early 20th-century American firearms, especially for those who value the enduring legacy of Colt’s Single Action Army. With matching numbers and a historic production date, this is a fine opportunity to own an original example of one of the most legendary revolvers ever made.
