Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army Second Generation represents Colt’s celebrated revival of its most iconic revolver after a fifteen-year production hiatus. Reintroduced in 1956, the Second Generation SAAs were built using original Colt tooling and closely followed First Generation specifications, restoring the Peacemaker to the market during a period of renewed interest driven by Western films, television, and a growing collector base. By the mid-1960s, production had fully matured, and revolvers from this era are widely regarded for their excellent fit, finish, and mechanical quality, offering a compelling blend of classic Colt craftsmanship and postwar consistency.

This example was manufactured in 1967 and is chambered in the traditional .45 Colt with a 5 1/2-inch barrel, one of the most balanced and historically popular configurations. Finished in factory nickel, the revolver retains approximately 97 percent of its original finish. Condition reflects light, honest use, including carbon rings on the cylinder, a thin turn line, and minor discoloration in protected areas such as the cylinder flutes. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 8.5 out of 10 due to minor fouling. Markings remain clear and legible throughout, and the screw heads are sharp.

The revolver is fitted with original smooth wood grips that are confirmed correct by the accompanying Colt factory letter. These grips show minimal handling marks, retain strong finish, and are free of chips or cracks, presenting in Excellent condition. Mechanically, the revolver functions correctly with tight lockup, a crisp trigger, and the correct separate cylinder bushing characteristic of early Second Generation production. The included Colt factory letter documents the revolver’s original configuration and shipping details, adding important provenance and collector value. Overall, this is a well-preserved Second Generation Single Action Army that combines desirable configuration, factory-documented originality, and strong condition, making it an excellent example for collectors of classic Colt revolvers.  Please see our photos for a better understanding of condition and good luck on your bids!
