Our Assessment: The Colt Service Model Ace is a fascinating piece of firearms history. Designed to offer a low-recoil, cost-effective training alternative to the legendary M1911, the Service Model Ace closely mimicked the handling of its .45 ACP counterpart while chambered in .22 Long Rifle. The inclusion of the floating chamber, designed by David “Carbine” Williams, allowed the pistol to simulate the recoil of a .45 without the expense of full-power ammunition.
This particular example was manufactured in 1940 and retains its original finish with well-defined markings. The included Colt factory letter adds a layer of historical value, documenting its shipment to H&D Folsom Arms Company in New York, a well-known distributor of sporting goods and firearms during the early 20th century.
For collectors of classic Colts, military trainers, or those interested in pre-war firearms, this Service Model Ace is a must-have. It offers both practical enjoyment at the range and a valuable piece of firearms history that would make an excellent addition to any collection.
