Our Assessment: The Colt Python is widely regarded as the finest double-action revolver ever mass-produced—a benchmark of craftsmanship that defined Colt’s postwar revolver legacy. Introduced in 1955 as the flagship of Colt’s premium “I-Frame” line, each Python was hand-fitted and finished to an exacting standard rarely seen in factory revolvers. This 1978 4-inch example embodies the perfect balance of elegance and utility: the full underlug and ventilated rib give it the unmistakable Python profile, while the shorter barrel length makes it equally suited for holster carry or target work.

Chambered in .357 Magnum, a cartridge born from the 1930s pursuit of greater velocity and penetration for law enforcement, the Python delivers both formidable power and fine accuracy, while still accepting .38 Special ammunition for light practice. The deep Colt royal blue finish—nearly mirror-like in its polish—remains one of the most striking in the firearm world, showing about 99% original coverage with only faint handling marks and a light turn line. The walnut grips retain their Colt medallions and display honest wear from careful use, enhancing their character without compromising fit. With its solid lock-up, crisp single-action break, and glass-smooth double-action pull, this Python exemplifies the quality and handwork that earned the model its enduring reputation as “the Rolls-Royce of revolvers.” Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
