Our Assessment: The Colt Python has long been regarded as one of the finest production revolvers ever built, often referred to as the “Rolls-Royce of revolvers.” Introduced in 1955, the Python was designed as Colt’s flagship double-action revolver, with attention to detail, precision hand-fitting, and a level of finish that set it apart from its competitors. Its full underlug, vent-rib barrel, and sleek profile made it an instantly recognizable icon, and the 4” variant quickly became a favorite for both law enforcement and civilian use due to its balance of power and handling. This example, manufactured in 1970, represents the Python at a time when Colt’s craftsmanship was at its peak, during the golden era of American revolver production.
With about 85% of its original blue finish remaining, sharp mechanics, and a bright, strong bore, this Python retains both its functionality and its collector appeal. While it shows some honest wear consistent with careful use, the revolver remains highly attractive and mechanically sound, with its target hammer, serrated trigger, and classic Colt walnut grips still in place. For the collector, this piece offers the opportunity to own a desirable early production Python, eligible for C&R transfer, and for the shooter, it remains a revolver that delivers accuracy, durability, and that unmistakable Colt action. The market for Pythons continues to grow, and examples like this—authentic, well-preserved, and from the right era—make for smart additions to any serious collection.
