Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “PYTHON 357 / 357 MAGNUM CTG”. The right side of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. / HARTFORD CONN. U.S.A.”. The flat under the crane and the crane are marked with the serial number “30806”.The sideplate is marked with a “Rampant Colt” logo. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with “VP” in a triangle.

Barrel Length: 2.5″ Vent-Rib with Full Underlug

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated, ramped blade pinned to the front of the rib. The rear sight is a square notch adjustable for windage and elevation in a base pinned to the top-strap. The top of the barrel rib and the top strap have a matte finish to reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition:The grips are two-piece checkered walnut. The grips have handling marks, scratches,and small chips out of the bottom of the grips. The checkering is sharp with worn peaks in some areas. Overall, the grips are in Good to Very Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is minor fouling present. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 95% of its finish. The balance of the finish is strong and complete throughout. There are some smudges and swirls on the frame. There is some thinning near the muzzle. The cylinder has a very faint turn-line and there is wear in the cylinder stops. There are carbon rings on the face of the cylinder. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The lock-up on this revolver is solid, with no play when the trigger is depressed. The action functions correctly. We have not fired this revolver. This revolver has a wide target style hammer and a serrated trigger. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Introduced in 1955 as Colt’s top-tier revolver, the Python was never intended as a utilitarian service arm but rather as a showcase of what Colt’s craftsmen could achieve. By 1964, when this revolver was manufactured, the Python had fully matured into a flagship model defined by meticulous hand fitting, mirror-polished blue finish, and an action celebrated for its smoothness and consistency.

Chambered in .357 Magnum, the Python was designed to harness the cartridge’s power while maintaining exceptional controllability. This example presents in very good condition, retaining a strong percentage of its original blue finish with only light handling wear and thinning near the muzzle consistent with careful use. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling, and the revolver exhibits solid lockup and proper function throughout. With its early production date, short-barrel configuration, and classic Colt craftsmanship, this 1964 Python stands as an excellent representative of one of the most iconic double-action revolvers ever produced.
