Our Assessment: The Colt New Frontier Single Action Army represents Colt’s most refined interpretation of the traditional SAA, pairing the classic single-action mechanism with fully adjustable target sights. Introduced in 1961, the New Frontier was intended for shooters who appreciated the balance and heritage of the Single Action Army but wanted improved accuracy potential through a serrated ramp front sight and an adjustable rear sight. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, the New Frontier had established itself as a premium variant within Colt’s single-action lineup, produced in relatively limited numbers and favored by target shooters and collectors alike.
This 1970 C&R example is chambered in the highly desirable .44 Special and fitted with the long 7 1/2 inch barrel, a configuration that offers an extended sight radius and excellent balance, particularly well suited to deliberate target shooting. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating a full 10 out of 10. The revolver retains approximately 97 percent of its original blue and case-colored finish, with strong overall finish retention. Carbon rings are present on the cylinder, consistent with some prior use, but the screw heads remain sharp and all markings are crisp and clearly legible. Overall metal condition remains solidly in the Fine range.
The smooth walnut grips with inset gold Rampant Colt medallions show only minor handling marks and light finish thinning, with no chips or cracks present, and remain in Fine overall condition. Mechanically, the revolver functions correctly, with a crisp trigger and tight cylinder lockup across all six chambers, exhibiting very little play. The revolver is accompanied by its serial-matching Colt factory cardboard box with styrofoam insert and owner’s manual, with the box showing moderate wear consistent with age and storage. Taken as a whole, this New Frontier stands as a well-preserved, long-barrel example from Colt, combining the enhanced shootability that defined the New Frontier line with strong condition and complete factory accessories, making it an appealing acquisition for collectors and Colt enthusiasts alike.
