Action Type: Rimfire, Single Action Revolver with Side Loading Gate Cylinder

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “NEW FRONTIER .22” and the top “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The left of the frame is marked “PAT. SEPT. 19. 1871 / JULY 2. 72 JAN. 19. 75” and with a rampant colt logo. The bottom of the frame is marked “G17101” in front of the trigger guard. The sides of the cylinder are stamped “.22 L.R.” in several places.

Barrel Length:  4 3/4”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade soldered to the barrel.  The rear sight is a square notch adjustable for windage and elevation in a base pinned to the top-strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered black synthetic panels with a rampant colt in oval at their tops and American eagles below. There are a few minor handling marks throughout, particularly on the bottom of the grips. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Fine condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore but there is fouling present.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 98% of its metal finish. There is light to moderate thinning on the leading edges of the cylinder. There are carbon rings on the face of the cylinder along with a very faint turn line. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Fine condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Colt New Frontier .22 represents Colt’s thoughtful evolution of the Single Action Army platform, blending classic Peacemaker lines with features aimed squarely at accuracy and refinement. Introduced in the early 1960s, the New Frontier series distinguished itself by incorporating adjustable sights into the traditional SAA profile, offering shooters a more precise and versatile single-action revolver without abandoning Colt’s historic design language. By 1971, the New Frontier had become a well-established model, reflecting Colt’s continued emphasis on craftsmanship during a transitional era for American revolver production.

Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, this revolver captures the handling and balance of a centerfire Peacemaker while benefiting from the economy, mild recoil, and inherent accuracy of the .22 LR cartridge. The adjustable square-notch rear sight and serrated ramp front blade mark a clear departure from fixed-sight frontier revolvers, allowing for fine point-of-impact adjustments and making the New Frontier particularly well suited for target shooting and deliberate recreational use. The classic 4 3/4-inch barrel preserves the traditional SAA proportions that many collectors and shooters find most visually and ergonomically appealing.

This example retains approximately 98 percent of its original blue and case-colored finish, with only light cylinder edge thinning, a faint turn line, and carbon rings consistent with limited, careful use. Markings remain clear, screw heads are sharp, and the bright bore with strong rifling supports the Fine overall condition assessment. Taken as a whole, this Colt New Frontier stands as a well-preserved rimfire SAA that successfully bridges Old West aesthetics with modern target functionality, offering both historical appeal and practical shootability.
